REDONDO BEACH, CA — A Redondo Beach student was awarded a scholarship by the National Society of High School Scholars for his work raising awareness for student mental health.

Senior Matthew Tsao at Bishop Montgomery High School is part of the Youth Advisory Council through the Beach Cities Health District. As part of the council, Matthew develops programs for young students to have information about mental health and how to overcome struggles.

Tsao also interns as a Peer and Research assistant at the youth facility Allcove where he is working on a research project about how nutrition affects the mental well-being of young people.

"In his role, he also facilitates programs and events teens can get involved in, decreasing the stigma and offering teens the chance to get help or even prevent future mental health issues," An NSHSS spokesperson said.

In the future, Matthew plans to continue to connect students with resources, discuss health issues with young people in the Beach Cities and develop new campaigns.
