REDONDO BEACH, CA – The Redondo Beach City Council formed a subcommittee Tuesday to pitch an idea to the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games. The idea would make their vision a reality – Olympic swimmers and water polo players competing in Redondo Beach.

In addition to open water swimming near The Esplanade, Mayor Bill Brand said the city is also proposing Olympic water polo events at a future aquatic center at the AES site with the potential to bring in 30,000 spectators per day, according to The Beach Reporter.

“Anything is possible right now and there’s still a lot of time,” Brand told The Beach Reporter. “It’s all going to be very competitive, but it’s early in the game.”

Currently, both events are expected to be held in Long Beach. Along with increased exposure and revenue, the Olympic committee would pay for the construction of the aquatic center – an estimated $13.9 million – which would be a huge asset to the future of Redondo Beach.
