REDONDO BEACH, CA — Some South Bay Metro Stations will be closed for over a month while crews replace the light rail power lines between many stations.

Work will begin Saturday, Aug. 12 and will continue until Sept. 25 in two different phases. This upgrade project is part of Metro's State of Good Repair Program which seeks to keep stations in good working order and provide upgrades.

"The ongoing replacement of overhead power lines is needed as the light rail line approaches 30 years of service," officials said.

This first phase of closures will begin with stations between Hawthorne/Lennox and Redondo Beach starting Saturday and lasting until Aug 19. The second phase will be for stations between Aviation/LAX and Redondo Beach starting Aug. 20 and lasting until Sept. 25.

During the closures, Metro will perform intensive cleaning at stations, including trash abatement, painting, weed removal and several other tasks.

Metro will provide a free shuttle bus service to replace the suspended services at all closed stations, including Aviation/LAX, Mariposa, El Segundo, Douglas and Redondo Beach. Metro officials said travelers should allow 10 to 30 minutes of extra time to account for the changes.

"Metro Ambassadors will be available to assist patrons at the Hawthorne/Lennox Station board shuttle buses as well as to provide other wayfinding assistance," officials said.

Additional dates for future work will be announced in advance. According to Metro, all upgrades that are part of the State of Good Repair Program are expected to take a number of years to complete.
