'Works Tirelessly To Help Dogs In Need': Redondo Beach Star Student

We all know students who excel in academic, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one student who is having an impact in Redondo Beach.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Danelle Levin who nominated Sydney of Redondo Beach. Levin volunteers with Sydney at Rover's Retreat and admires her maturity and willingness to help at the dog rescue organization.

How do you know the star local student?

I volunteer with Sydney at Rover's Retreat, dog rescue organization

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Sydney is an amazing volunteer. She is mature beyond her 18 years. Her journey with Rover's Retreat began in January 2018 when her family fostered a puppy that unfortunately died from distemper. It was devastating for the family and they asked for the puppy's ashes because they were the only family she knew in her short life. The family wanted to foster again to help more dogs.

Sydney started gradually taking on more and more responsibilities even though she was only 12 or 13. Since that time Sydney has never stopped. She works tirelessly to help dogs in need. As a foster representative, she assesses the dog's needs, coordinates medical care, works with foster homes and ultimately finds their forever home.

I started working with Rover's Retreat in December 2019 when Sydney facilitated the adoption for my first rescue dog. I began volunteering with Rover's Retreat at that time helping with in-home interviews and screening potential applicants. Sydney has taught me everything I know about dog rescue. I still manage to learn something new every day from her and the other volunteers.

Besides mentoring me and being an amazing foster representative Sydney also handles the social media for the rescue and does an exceptional dog. She creates beautiful and moving content and drives donations. I'm so thankful for young people like Sydney.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Everything! Sydney is simply the best! She's professional with potential adopters and foster homes. Always puts the dog's needs first. Sydney is loving and kind with every animal that comes into rescue. She never gives up on a dog. Sydney is smart, I credit everything I have learned about dog rescue to her. I think of her as my mentor and friend even though I am much older.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future,Sydney!
