LOS ANGELES, CA — A wrong-way driver triggered a pileup on the San Diego (405) Freeway in the South Bay area Monday, sending cars scattered across the freeway and down an embankment.

The crash happened in the early morning just north of Vermont Avenue. It's the latest in a string of wrong-way crashes plaguing that stretch of the 405 Freeway.

The California Highway Patrol received a report of a car slowly heading northbound in the southbound lanes just before 2:30 a.m. Monday. The car was traveling at about 15 miles an hour, according to the witness. A moment later, authorities received a report of a pileup in the area.

The 405 Freeway has had a string of wrong-way crashes over the last year.

On Halloween, another wrong-way driver triggered a deadly 12-car pileup on the 405-Freeway in Long Beach. Two drivers died in that crash. And in 2020, a wrong-way crash in February on the 405 Freeway near the Getty Center left one person dead. All three wrong-way crashes occurred in the early morning hours.
