Pretty much everything east of California has been a mess this winter with record snowfall recorded in such diverse places as Denver and Boston. Even the Deep South got stuck in the deep freeze a few times.

If you’re seeking warmth, Hawaii and California are your best bets. If Hawaii isn’t in the budget—lucky us—four California cities landed on Trip Advisor’s List to Top 25 Travel Destinations for 2015. All can be reached within a day’s drive.

San Francisco:
Ah, the City by the Bay. The view of the Golden Gate Bridge from the Marina district never gets old. And right now the City is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition with ongoing events and exhibits. The kids will love the Dutch Windmill across from Ocean Beach, the attractions and sea lions at Pier 39, and cool stuff in Golden Gate Park such as the California Academy of Sciences.

Los Angeles:
L.A. has it all, from great beaches to movie studios and amusement parks. Check out the famous hand- and footprints sealed in cement at the TCL Chinese Theatre, peer through the telescopes at Griffith Observatory or expose you kids to amazing artwork at The Getty Center.

San Diego:
Another city where a trip to the beach is on the must-do list. Then head to the renowned San Diego Zoo, where you may get a glimpse of the baby gorilla. Check out the USS Midway Museum, the top rated attraction in San Diego.

Palm Springs:
The beach isn’t your thing but you’re looking to crank up the heat? Try Palm Springs. Ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, take a hike on San Jacinto Mountain, or tour the Palm Springs Air Museum. Too strenuous? Lounging by the pool may be exactly what you need to regroup for the end-of-the-school-year sprint.
