2 SoCal Neighborhoods Among Most Up-And-Coming In U.S.: Report

TravelMag curated a list of the "most appealing" neighborhoods in the country.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — Two Southern California neighborhoods are among the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in the country, according to a new study.

TravelMag named Frogtown, Los Angeles, and North Park, San Diego, as two of the "most appealing" neighborhoods in the U.S.

The publication compiled a list of 16 neighborhoods in major U.S. metropolitan areas and scored them on specific criteria, including the number of cool cocktail bars, fancy coffee houses and trendy eateries that have popped up in the past few years. The travel website also considered eclectic boutiques, as well as LGBTQ-friendly and vegan spots when curating the list.

"Once considered rough and tumble, Frogtown has evolved over the past five to 10 years," TravelMag said. "While artists have long been drawn to this laid-back community, Frogtown's art scene is currently booming, with famed creatives like Thomas Houseago and Shepard Fairey connected to the neighborhood."

TravelMag also highlighted the neighborhood's vintage shops, open-air restaurant, beer garden, and bike rental and repair shop.

North Park, San Diego

North Park, north of Balboa Park, was recognized as the most up-and-coming place in San Diego. The neighborhood is centered on the brewery-studded intersection of University Avenue and 30th Street.

"As much a place for families as it is for singles, this San Diego parcel offers an eclectic mix of restaurants, coffee houses, boutiques and bars," the publication noted.

TravelMag highlighted the neighborhood's popular culinary scene and many colorful murals. The publication also put a spotlight on Verbatim Books, San Diego's largest independent bookshop, and The Observatory North Park, a restored theater.

"We are immensely proud to receive this recognition from Travel Mag," said Mark West, executive director of North Park Main Street. "This honor reflects the passion and perseverance of our community. We remain committed to fostering an environment that promotes creativity, inclusivity, and economic growth, ensuring North Park continues to shine as a beacon of progress in San Diego."
