SAN DIEGO, CA — Seven fraternities at San Diego State University have been suspended, according to the school.

The interim suspensions, which are due to allegations that the groups violated the Student Organization Code of Conduct, include Phi Kappa Psi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Kappa Alpha Order, Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Phi, according to the university.

The fraternities could face probation or expulsion, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune, which reported the code of conduct bans hazing, underage drinking and sexual misconduct.

A former student in recent months filed a lawsuit claiming near death due to hazing, the newspaper reported, and in 2019 freshman Dylan Hernandez was fatally injured when he fell out of bed after drinking at a fraternity party.

The Union-Tribune previously reported that 19 of at least 49 fraternities and sororities at the school were reprimanded in some capacity by the university between 2014 and 2019, mostly due to incidents involving underage drinking, hazing, assault, sexual harassment and noise.
