Convict Who Walked Away From Conservation Camp Captured In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA — A convict who walked away from a conservation camp was captured Wednesday in San Diego, authorities said.

Ashiel Bahar, 37, was apprehended without incident shortly after 8 a.m. in San Diego, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Officials did not release the exact location of his arrest.

Bahar was discovered missing at 3 a.m. Tuesday at Owens Valley Conservation Camp in Inyo County, according to the CDCR.

Bahar was sent to the minimum-security camp from San Diego County on Nov. 1, 2023, to serve a four-year sentence for first-degree burglary, using the identification of another to obtain personal identifying information, grand theft firearm, grand theft exceeding $950, and evading or attempting to evade a peace officer while driving recklessly.

His case will be referred to the Inyo County District Attorney for possible escape charges, the CDCR said.
