SAN DIEGO, CA — A mother and her 2-year-old son were killed after an apparent fall from a third level concourse at Petco Park, the home of the San Diego Padres Major League Baseball team, on Saturday.

The woman, who was 40, and the boy fell from the concourse that was the equivalent of six stories high, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. They fell on the sidewalk below the park on Tony Gwynn Drive, San Diego police homicide Lt. Andrea Brown told the newspaper.

The Petco Park deaths "appeared to be suspicious," she added, but said police did not know right away whether the fall was accidental or intentional.

“Our hearts obviously go out to the family, but also to the people who here could potentially be traumatized who saw this,” Brown said. “It’s a horrible, horrible thing. That’s why we’re giving it a very serious look.”

The fall occurred as nearly 40,000 fans were filing into the ballpark to watch the Padres host the Atlanta Braves. The game was not canceled or postponed due to the deaths.

Names of the victims were not available as of Sunday morning, but police said both the mother and son lived in San Diego, according to a CNN report that cited a separate statement from San Diego police.

Police officers tried to perform CPR, according to the report, but both people were pronounced dead at the scene.

The child's father was at the ballpark at the time, the Union-Tribune also reported.
