SAN DIEGO, CA — The first day of school will be postponed for students in the San Diego Unified School District, officials announced Sunday as Tropical Storm Hilary moved through San Diego County.

Schools in the San Diego Unified School District will be closed Monday, according to the San Diego County Office of Education.

"Postponing the first day will allow the district to assess any impact to sites and offices and ensure they are prepared to welcome students and families to the new school year," said Music Watson of the Office of Education.

School districts, charter schools and private schools, in conjunction with public safety officials, will continue to monitor weather and road conditions, as most school districts in the county have already started the new school year. Conditions permitting, those schools "will operate as usual" on Monday "to ensure students have a safe place to go and learn," Watson said.
