MARIN COUNTY, CA — A Marin biotech plans to lay off 94 workers, The Marin Independent Journal reports.

San Rafael-based BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. confirmed its workforce reduction plans to the state in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice, the report said.

The company employs 3,000, of which 2,000 are based in Marin, the report said.

BioMarin earlier this month issued a news release announcing plans to ax around 120 workers, about four percent of its global work force.

The company plans to lay off 62 workers in San Rafael and 32 in Novato.

The layoffs are part of a “redesign” that figures to save BioMarin around $50 million a year, the company said in a statement.

"We want to recognize everyone impacted by this initiative for their contributions on behalf of the patients we serve,” BioMarin Chairman and CEO Jean-Jacques Bienaimé said in a statement.

“Change is necessary to fulfill our commitment to operating the business in the best interest of our patients, shareholders, and other stakeholders. This requires that our organization is the right size, has the right structure, and has the right focus to operate with maximum effectiveness and efficiency.

"This change allows us to continue building upon our core strength in genetic discovery to have a transformative impact on the lives of even more patients."
