SAN RAFAEL, CA — Smoke visible around central Marin on Monday was from a fire that heavily damaged a San Rafael family's home, according to fire officials.

The San Rafael Fire Department confirmed a house fire on Oakmont Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Monday, noting a heavy plume of smoke drifting toward Santa Venetia. Fire crews arrived to find a garage ablaze and flames spreading into a two-story home.

Fire crews fought the flames for nearly 40 minutes, and officials said the home's occupants and pets all made it to safety. Investigators believe the fire began in the engine of a vehicle parked inside the garage.
