SAN RAFAEL, CA — The San Rafael Police Department will complete a detailed investigation into the death of a bicyclist who was killed by a pickup truck Saturday morning at a railroad crossing on Andersen Drive.

In a news release Thursday, police said 911 callers reported the crash at 7:45 a.m. at a SMART railroad grade crossing just north of Andersen Drive and Francisco Boulevard West. Officers and medics arrived at the scene within minutes and determined the cyclist had died from his injuries.

The department assigned its Major Accident Investigation Team to the case, and the preliminary investigation kept the stretch of railroad closed for seven hours, police said. Investigators said they determined the cyclist had traveled over the tracks and fell to the pavement, landing in the path of a pickup truck traveling northbound. Police said the driver was unable to stop in time.
