SAN RAFAEL, CA — The state Office of Traffic Safety has awarded the Marin County District Attorney's Office a $453,000 grant to keep a specialized unit running that focuses on impaired driving cases.

The two-person team handles prosecutions related to alcohol and drug impairment and will partner with a statewide program to train other prosecutors and law enforcement agencies on best practices for handling such cases.

The Marin County DUI team is in its 12th year of operation, and last year filed more than 900 DUI cases.

"Marin County is safer thanks to the hard work and experience of our Vertical DUI Prosecution Team (VDPT)," said Lori E. Frugoli, the district attorney. "Our VDPT would not be possible without the generous funding by the Office of Traffic Safety, which provides the necessary financial means to successfully prosecute serial DUI drivers and to keep Marin highways and streets safe for all drivers and pedestrians."

The state program is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the latest grant runs through the end of next September.
