Marin Supes To Consider New Rules For Short Term Rentals

MARIN COUNTY, CA — The Board of Supervisors will take up proposed changes to Marin County's rules on short-term rentals, like those booked via Airbnb and VRBO, during a public meeting scheduled next Thursday.

Supervisors are set to receive a staff analysis and other details about an updated ordinance that would apply to "STR" properties in unincorporated areas, including more limited in coastal communities that are popular vacation destinations, according to the county.

STRs are classified as rentals of homes or portions of homes for 30 days or less. The planned revisions follow the 2018 passage of the initial countywide ordinance in 2018, aiming to balance the interests of property owners and visitors with the displacement impacts of such properties on long-term renters.

"The Community Development Agency staff made a recommendation to the Planning Commission in November for STR regulations that include a countywide limit and a cap on the number of STRs allowed in each township, reflecting the number of STRs registered in recent years," officials wrote this week. "The Planning Commission recommended directing STR activity toward specific locations over time, capping STRs at a considerably lower number in some areas and removing limits altogether in Dillon Beach and in the Seadrift portion of Stinson Beach.

During the Jan. 11 meeting, supervisors will review the recommendations and hold a vote on a Local Coastal Plan Amendment application. Residents are invited to participate in the meeting in person or online, beginning at 5 p.m.
