Why You Should Report Underage Drinking Parties

and other important tips to keep kids safe!

We realize that parenting through the teen years can be very challenging.

You are not alone. A recent survey shows that a vast majority of Marin parents are concerned about youth substance abuse, and have discussed family rules or values about not using drugs and alcohol.

As we all know, in addition to being dangerous, underage drinking is against the law and can negatively impact brain development. However, 41% of 11th graders in Marin have reported using alcohol in the last 30 days, and 73% of young people in Marin have reported that they most often drink at home with friends, at parties, or at other social events.

So how can we help ensure our kids are safe and reach their full potential?

  1. Talk to your kids about alcohol and drug use. Research shows that parents are the #1 reason young people decide not to drink. So start talking to your children about alcohol as early as 9 years old, and talk often.
  2. Understand the Social Host Ordinance: Why and how it’s being enforced, and how to use it as a tool to start conversations with your kids and other parents. This ordinance holds you accountable for underage alcohol use in your home.
  3. If you are hosting a party for minors, make it clear that alcohol is not permitted, check backpacks and purses for alcohol and drugs, and keep an eye on your guests.
  4. If you are hosting a party for adults, make sure to serve plenty of food and non-alcoholic drinks. Stop serving alcohol an hour before the party ends. If youth are attending your party, be clear that alcohol is for adults only.
  5. Keep medications locked up. The media has recently reported several incidents where youth have been hospitalized and even died after taking prescription medications and cough medicines from medicine cabinets at parties. You can be held liable if this happens in your home.
  6. Report underage drinking parties. Our police departments are trained to disperse parties safely, calling parents and guardians to pick up their kids so they don’t drive home drunk. Call the SRPD non-emergency number 415-485-3000, or the Sheriff (unincorporated areas like Marinwood) 415-479-2311.
