Excavator Crashes Into Bridge In Santa Cruz County

The excavator proved to tall to clear a pedestrian bridge near Soquel on Monday, damaging the crossing and creating a lengthy closure.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — A large excavator being towed on a trailer collided with a pedestrian bridge Monday afternoon near Soquel, damaging the crossing and closing a road to westbound traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP shared a photo of the incident shortly before 1:30 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Soquel Drive and Cabrillo College Drive. The CHP said the westbound lanes of Soquel Drive would remain closed until further notice while crews assessed the bridge and cleared the scene.

Officials encouraged drivers to use northbound Highway 1 as an alternate route.
