DAVENPORT, CA — A stranded kite surfer was rescued after using rocks to spell out the word “help” on the beach, according to authorities.

The surfer, trapped on a beach south of Davenport Landing, was seen by a private helicopter that called 911, Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit said in a Facebook post around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Cal Fire worked with firefighting agencies for Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz County as well as California State Parks to complete the extraction, with video capturing how a rescuer was lowered from a helicopter to the surfer on the beach, which was isolated by a steep cliff.
