10K Square-Foot 'Cardboard City'​ Coming To Downtown Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA, CA — This summer, Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade will take on a new look with the temporary addition of "Cardboard City," a dynamic pop-up art installation featuring exhibitions and hands-on activities.

A collaboration between the City of Santa Monica, Starpoint Properties and the reDiscover Center, the pop-up will be in place from July 8 to August 29.

The 10,000 square-foot installation is set to come complete with museum-style exhibitions made from cardboard, work from artists-in-residence, free activities for kids and adults and creativity classes, for an additional cost.

Classes aim to serve as many as 1,500 students ages 8 and up. The entire Cardboard City, meanwhile, will be available for private daytime and evening events of up to 200 people, according to a release.

In addition to rolling out Cardboard City, reDiscover annoucned it will also partner with P.S. Arts, an art education nonprofit, to develop a 10-week curriculum for LA County students in fourth and fifth grades.

The curriculum will teach students the art and science between cardboard enginnering.

reDiscover announced it is also partnering with Makedo to provide free creative cardoard tools to participants and partner schools throughout LA County.

Cardboard City will open at noon on July 8 and operate every Thursday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

A grand opening will be celebrated at noon on July 8 at 1231 Third St. Promenade in Santa Monica.
