SANTA MONICA, CA — The Santa Monica Pier will be home one of the Southland's largest flags — or at least an image of one — when the pier's Ferris wheel illuminates as part of a celebration of the Fourth of July.

Pacific Park's Ferris wheel will display a 90-foot tall, animated, waving American Flag beginning Wednesday. The display will also feature an assortment of red, white and blue colors, patterns and transitions.

The Ferris wheel, known as the Pacific Wheel, features 174,000 LED lights, which are mounted on the wheel's 40 spokes, two hubs and other parts of the structure. That all helps create 16.7 million color value combinations.
