The Beat Goes On At Harvelle's -Livestream Captain Danger 4/22/21

April 22, 2021 - - LA-based funk-rock-pop trio Captain Danger is taking the stage tonight (Earth Day) at the legendary music venue Harvelle’s in Santa Monica at 7pm for a livestreaming event – with a sure-to-be-energized performance, serving as a reminder that live“Record Release party” kinds of events are still within the realm of possibility in the age of covid - especially at a venue that has embraced possibilities, still forging ahead after 90 years.

Captain Danger had decided “the time was now” to release their new album Love Sweet Love “come hell or high water . . . or a pandemic,” explains guitarist /vocalist Aaron Steinberg. Working with Los Angeles’ own Planetary Group on the promotion end the band has been racking up rave reviews and strong airplay thus far. But something was still missing. Keith “E-Day” Eaddy (on bass/vocals/keys, known for his work with Macy Gray, Dam-Funk and Jody Watley) shares that “without a live performance to cap it off, our adventure in releasing these songs wouldn’t feel quite complete or true to what we’re about. And Harvelle’s has always felt like homebase for us.”

Damian Anastasio (part owner of Harvelle’s) says that making artists and patrons feel at home is entirely deliberate, and is a key part of their approach. “The feeling you get when you come see an artist here, or if you swing by for cocktails, or if you’re a performing artist yourself – we know that’s our path to longevity. It’s connected to how we view success.” Longevity may be an understatement; Harvelle’s has been featuring live music since its establishment in 1931 (a speakeasy then), and it seems possible that the venue is the oldest continually-running live music venue in the state. Co-owner Cevin Clark has been steering the ship at Harvelle’s since the 1990s, and along with co-owner Jason Gochin, as partners they are seeing to it that the future remains wide open.

“Soon after the pandemic hit, it started to become clear this was not going to be just a two-week shutdown,” Anastasio explains. So the venue began to adapt – as it has done throughout its 90 or so years into existence – and began the task of getting equipped with a state-of-the-art livestreaming / recording system. Ironing out the kinks throughout covid, the upcoming performance from regulars Captain Danger is an excellent example of the venue’s approach of combining old and new; exemplary technology supports Harvelle’s distinctive, timelessly-cool retro vibe.

Captain Danger is fully gearing up for the night. It’s “Earth Day," and launching off from the enthusiasm of their amusing new sci-fi themed music video “Holly,” the band has dubbed the evening at Harvelle’s “Back-to-Earth Day.” And if you sensed a double-meaning in that title, rest assured it’s intentional – for the band, “re-taking the stage seems like getting back to who we are and what we do,” says drummer Roger “Joose” Benford (also known for his work with SiR, Katalyst Collective and T.Nava). With songs described as having “shades of Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, The Meters and The Police,” Captain Danger is planning to set their musical phasers on stun.
