Dockweiler State Beach Reopens After Sewage, Dirty Needles Prompted Closure

The beach was closed after medical and other waste washed up on the sand, creating a public health hazard.

Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey reopened today after medical waste from a sewer pipe began washing up on the beach, according to Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The closure was announced on Tuesday.

The medical and other waste had been discharged from the Hyperion Treatment Plant, according to Heal the Bay, an environmental activist and water monitoring group.

Beachgoers were also advised to avoid the water at Mothers Beach in Marina del Rey and Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades.
