SANTA MONICA, CA — Lori Burns was walking her small dog in Santa Monica when he suddenly started breathing heavily and collapsed. She rushed him to an animal hospital where she found out the 15-pound pup had overdosed on oxycodone.

Chance, named after Chance the Rapper, narrowly survived and ended up blind, Burns wrote in a Facebook post about the incident. She was walking her two dogs on Ocean Avenue around 12 p.m. on Aug. 14.

"I couldn't believe what I was hearing. We had just gone out on a walk and an hour later my dog had ingested Oxycodone and was fighting for his life," Burns wrote on Facebook.

Chance spent the night at the vet and returned home to rest after the drug was removed from his system.

Burns told KTLA she was not sure where her dog had found or ingested the oxycodone, but she is using her story as a warning for dog owners frequenting local parks. The Santa Monica area was busy with people exercising, walking dogs, playing with kids and hanging out, Burns said.

"It’s upsetting and sad that we can’t leave our homes without worrying about things like this. We need change," Burns said on Facebook.

Burns reported the incident with animal poison control.
