Drag Queen Storytime, Commencement: 5 Things Ahead In Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA, CA — School is out for the summer in Santa Monica and the city's shore are looking a little bit more crowded as tourist season is in full swing.

The week ahead is a busy one for Santa Monica residents, here are five things to look out for:

  1. Kicking off the week, students in Santa Monica are out of school for summer vacation after Monday. Seniors at Santa Monica High School celebrated their graduation last week on June 8. Classes resume in the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District on Aug. 24.
  2. Tuesday's Santa Monica City Council meeting will have council members hear a presentation on key policy considerations for allowing adult-use cannabis businesses and other non-retail cannabis business types in the city. During the study session, the council will discuss whether to create a regulatory permit and selection process for medical dispensaries. The council will also discuss drafting an ordinance prohibiting commercial cannabis-related business activities.
  3. For the first time since 2019, Santa Monica College will hold its fully in-person commencement ceremony on Tuesday. Graduates will walk across the stage at Corsair Field beginning at 5 p.m. About 1,120 graduates out of the 6,162 total students who earned degrees will participate in the ceremony and over 6,000 guests will be in attendance.
  4. For those who like to support local farmers and enjoy fresh produce, this week's Downtown Santa Monica Farmer's Market is on Wednesday, June 14. For more information visit DTSM's website.
  5. Finishing up the week, the city will continue to celebrate Pride Month with Drag Queen Storytime at the Annenberg Community Beach House on Friday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Guest of honor Pickle will lead an interactive story time designed to challenge gender stereotypes, encourage self-expression and promote diversity and inclusion.
