SANTA MONICA, CA — A fire damaged an apartment building in Santa Monica, authorities said Tuesday.

Firefighters sent to the 1900 block of 17th Street at 11:50 p.m. Monday quickly extinguished the flames in one unit on the first floor of the two-story building, the Santa Monica Fire Department reported.

"SMFD investigators have determined the fire to be `unintentional' in nature," the department said in a statement.
