After last gasp comebacks, the Lighthouse Christian Academy died out in Game 5 of CIF quarter finals against Liberty High School of Winchester Wednesday.

"It was a great season and we really fought hard. God was with us the whole time," says LCA Captain Allie Scribner. "This game makes me so mad, it makes me want to kill somebody."

She was laughing as she said it. It's a joke.

"That's how I get my anger out," she laughs. "I keep the hit list on the downlow. I keep that a secret."

Allie spearheaded a 4th game surge with aces to close the set 25-16. The decisive victory came right on the heels of a 3rd game comeback 25-23.

It seemed the momentum would carry through to bring the Saints to Semi Finals. But the Saints sputtered and lost 7-15.

"We started out not playing ourselves," LCA Coach Jessica Young says. "We were able to to pull it together and were able to show what we could do more at the end. In Game 4 we showed who we really are. In Game 5, they outplayed us."

The Saints tailed the Bison for all of Game 1 and ended 18-25. In Game 2, the Saints led twice, once 7-3 and then later 17-15. But they surrendered 21-25.

In Game 3, after tailing 21-23, Clara Czer nailed hits and delivered up serves to carry LCA to a 25=23 win. The Santa Monica fans -- numbering a fourth of the fans in the faraway gym -- erupte boisterously.

The Saints started Game 4 poorly, down 5-11. But then Dahlia Gonzalez, D-1 recruitable, stuffed the ball in the faces of Bison blockers and sparked a Lighthouse comeback. Freshman Shayla Papik smashed three serves for points and then hit at the net to bring the score even at 16-16.

Karine Keyser made a block to notch another point, and Clara made an unreturnable hit. The raucous Lighthouse fans were roaring and stomping on the bleachers.

Shayla nailed a corner on a spike. Clara nailed hits. She was making sure her last season wouldn't end weakly.

It was 21-16.

Allie rotating to server and put on display her best trap shooting, making hot work of the rest of the game. The Saints won Game 4.

An upset was building momentum. The Saints had found their best form and only needed to carry it to its finality in Game 5.

"It wasn't in the cards for us," says Allie stoically.
