SANTA MONICA, CA — Come sunset Wednesday, the Santa Monica Pier will glow purple and gold for late basketball legend Kobe Bryant.

The Pacific Park Ferris wheel will shine with 174,000 LED lights spelling out "LA [loves] 24" and "LA [loves] 8" in honor of Kobe Bryant Day, celebrated the day after his birthday on Aug 24. The 24 also represents Bryant's famous jersey number.

The 90-foot Pacific Park Ferris wheel is the world's only solar powered Ferris wheel lighting system, creating a spectacle throughout Santa Monica. The wheel will show off a number of Bryant-related patterns and transitions.
