SANTA MONICA, CA — June has begun in Santa Monica and tourist season is in full swing as children are out of school for the summer and families plan vacations to the beach.

The week ahead is a busy one for Santa Monica residents, here are five things to look out for:

  1. Last week, the Santa Monica Malibu School District named Dr. Antonio Shelton as its new superintendent after an extensive months-long search. Shelton's appointment to the position was officially announced at the School Boards June 1 meeting. Before becoming superintendent, Shelton worked as the school district's executive director and was previously the principal of Santa Monica High School for six years.
  2. For those who like to support local farmers and enjoy fresh produce, this week's Downtown Santa Monica Farmer's Market is on Wednesday, June 7. For more information visit DTSM's website.
  3. As Santa Monica continues to celebrate Pride Month, there are many events for residents to enjoy to show support for the LGBTQ+ community. This week, the Santa Monica Publis Library will host a Rainbow Family Storytime for ages 3 and up on Tuesday, June 6. Additionally, AIDS/LifeCycle will celebrate with a Finish Line Festival just south of the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, June 10 that will include live entertainment, inspirational stories and food. The Santa Monica College Musical Theatre Workshop will celebrate live theater with performances of "Carnival — Melodious Maxiums" spanning the whole weekend from Friday, June 9 to Sunday, June 11. The performance is a fantastical collage of revelry from the center ring of musical theater. Tickets will run you $10 if purchased in advance, or $13 at the door.   5. Nearby Venice Beach-owned and operated surf lifestyle brand Saba Surf is wrapping up the week by hosting a Southern California-wide beach cleanup on Sunday, June 11. Those who choose to participate will get the chance to win prizes like a month's supply of Saba Surf wax and entry into a surfboard giveaway.
