An unknown suspect caused thousands of dollars of damage to the menorah in the Montana neighborhood, police said.

SANTA MONICA, CA — An unknown suspect caused thousands of dollars of damage to a menorah displayed in Santa Monica last week, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

The menorah is displayed at the corner of 15th Street and Montana Avenue to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, which started on Dec. 7 and ended on Dec. 15 this year.

No further information was available about the incident, which occurred on Dec. 14, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

"All month, the SMPD has extra officers providing high visibility patrols of all our religious institutions. This destruction is a reminder that in this season of holidays and festivities we all need to watch out for the health and welfare of our community," SMPD said in a statement.
