Former students were shocked and saddened by Backer's sudden passing.

SANTA MONICA, CA — Paul Backer, a beloved professor at the USC School of Dramatic Arts , died last week at his home in Santa Monica, the school announced Monday.

Backer, who taught theater practice and was the director of undergraduate voice and movement program, has taught at USC since 1984.

Backer regularly directed undergraduate theater productions and enjoyed guiding students in mounting their own independent productions, the school said.

"Professor Paul Backer, may he rest in peace, was one of those special people. I wish I could see him one more time, hug him and thank him for inspiring me, educating me, and most importantly, believing in me," Yafit Josephson said in a Facebook post. "My experience at USC has always been an unforgettable one because of Paul."

Another former student was not only mourning the loss of Backer, but also mourned the loss for future students who will not have a chance to get to know him.

"I feel for every one of your past students today who, like me, is feeling this loss very deeply," Greta McAnanywrote on Facebook. "But most of all I feel sorry for all of the incoming students at USC who won't get to take Theater History from you or be in one of your voice classes or shows. They won't know what it feels like to have a supporter and cheerleader like you — seriously I think you went to every student show — how did you do that?! You have taught us all that being a good person will always trump being a good artist. Thank you for everything."

One common theme in all of the messages posted online in reaction to Backer's passing was the support he gave his students.

"In my time in Los Angeles, I have not met someone more supportive, grounded or kind as Paul Backer," Alex Ho wrote. "To me, he seemed beyond the limits of humanity. Like an ancient presence disguised as a man meant to guide those along the path. What a blow to the spirit to lose this excellent mentor."

Backer was a longtime member of several companies, including Theatre East and Actors Alley Repertory Theatre, and he was the artistic director and chair of the artistic board of the Ojai Shakespeare Festival for 17 years. Backer was also a founding member of the Shakespeare Theatre Association and served two years on the executive board.

Backer does not have any children, but often considered his students to be his children.

A memorial service was scheduled for Friday.
