Samohi Ranks In Top 4% Best High Schools Nationwide

Out of 18,000 public schools in the country, Santa Monica High School ranked 736 and 106 in California.

SANTA MONICA, CA — Santa Monica High School ranked in the top 4 percent of high schools nationwide in 2023, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Out of 18,000 public schools in the country, Samohi ranked 736 and 106 in California. For countywide rankings, Samohi ranked 45. These rankings are an improvement from last year, district officials said, when Samohi ranked 108 in the state and 826 in the nation.

“This acknowledgment from a widely esteemed publication, like U.S. News and World Report, underscores how our exceptional educators, staff and administrators effectively guide and equip our students for both higher education and their professional journeys,” said SMMUSD Superintendent, Dr. Antonio Shelton. “We extend our congratulations to every school team and our students for their unwavering effort, commitment and visionary outlook”

U.S. News rankings are determined by college readiness scores, based on demographics, state test scores and college prep exams. The rankings are focused on six factors:

  • college readiness;
  • reading and math proficiency;
  • reading and math performance;
  • underserved student performance;
  • college curriculum breadth;
  • graduation rates
