SANTA MONICA, CA — A motorist is facing legal trouble after being stopped by police for riding an electric motorcycle in a Santa Monica bike lane, police said.

Officers patrolling Ocean Avenue spotted the man driving the electric motorcycle in the bike lane. He was not wearing a helmet, the Santa Monica Police Department said Thursday.

After conducting a traffic stop, police learned that the man had a suspended license as part of a previous DUI conviction.

He was cited for multiple vehicle code violations and the motorcycle was impounded, police said.

Police issued a reminder to residents that motorcycles are not allowed in bike lanes and riders must always wear a helmet and be properly licensed.
