Colorado Springs is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Colorado Springs has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • The city was founded by General William J. Palmer in 1871 with a vision of creating a resort community. Palmer's influence is still felt today in the wide, tree-lined streets and the numerous parks and trails that make Colorado Springs one of the most livable cities in the United States.
  • Garden of the Gods, with its towering red rock formations, is a natural wonder in Colorado Springs. This National Natural Landmark offers not only breathtaking views but also serves as a vibrant historical and cultural site.
  • The United States Olympic & Paralympic Training Center is based in Colorado Springs. This facility is one of only two in the country and offers guests the chance to tour the complex, watch athletes in training and even try out some Olympic sports themselves.
  • The city's history is deeply intertwined with the gold rush era, notably through the Gold Camp Road. This historic route was originally built as a railroad to serve the gold camps west of the city and now serves as a scenic drive, allowing travelers to explore old tunnels and remnants of the gold rush that helped shape the region.
  • Colorado Springs is a gateway to the highest cog railway in the world. The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, just 10 minutes away in Manitou, takes you to the summit of Pikes Peak at 14,115 feet, offering stunning panoramic views along the way.
