Avon Roadway Will Be Closed Longer Than Expected

Weather delays, among other issues, have the road still being closed through this week after initially being slated to reopen Aug. 9.

A section of roadway closed since June was pegged for reopening last Friday (Aug. 9), but town officials Monday said it would remain closed through the end of this work week.

AVON, CT — A road closure linked to a massive road safety project in town has been extended by a few days.

Originally planned for an Aug. 9 reopening last Friday, town officials Monday announced that the closure of Scoville Road would continue until Friday, Aug. 16.

Town officials cited weather-related paving delays and new project limits to the nearby Rails to Trails.

"Traffic shall be able to use Scoville Road, including the section through the new roundabout, by the end of the day on the 16th," wrote Avon officials in an announcement Monday, Aug. 12.

As part of the project, once Scoville Road reopens, the section of Old Farms Road between Scoville Road and Thompson Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Friday, Aug. 16, and is anticipated to reopen on Friday, Oct. 18.

"Please note that the work listed above is weather-dependent therefore if it is raining/storming during these periods there may be a delay," wrote the town.

The construction is part of the massive, $5.5 million Avon Old Farms Road Phase I project, which started last June.

Voters on Dec. 14, 2022, approved a $5.5 million appropriation for the first phase of the Old Farms Road reconfiguration project.

This will widen and shift portions of the heavily traveled roadway and, presumably, improve safety and cut down on accidents.

Work on that phase has already begun and it is hoped to be done by December 2025.

While Phase I of the project marches to completion town/state officials are also planning a second phase.

Phase II — also dubbed the "East/West Section" — is in the planning stages and would require an additional, voter-approved appropriation.

The second phase of this project involves additional Old Farms Road re-alignments and replacing two bridges to widen lanes and improve safety.

No price tag has been finalized for Phase II.
