The local animal control department said the first responding police officer attending to the canine's plight last month is taking him in.

CANTON, CT — Two weeks after being dumped in the woods in a ghastly incident of animal abuse, "Tony," the cute, little mixed-breed terrier has a new home.

And, according to Burlington & Canton Animal Control, he was adopted by the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Officer who first responded to his plight.

Named "Tony," the cute canine's situation shocked the community in mid-July.

That's when he was left in a crate in the woods with some food inside it.

But Tony managed to escape from the crate and ended up on the road, where he was hit by a vehicle on Route 44 at Sterling Drive.

As the cute canine continues to recover from his injuries, animal control officials (Burlington and Canton share services) announced the good news Thursday.

While not identifying the officer, the Burlington & Canton Animal Control Department said he did save the dog's life that day.

"Tony's hero jumped into action immediately, being the first on scene, and got Tony straight to the emergency vet to get help," wrote the Burlington/Canton animal control.

"In the days that followed, it was clear Tony was where he needed to be. He got a clean bill of health today from the Veterinary Emergency Center of Canton and is ready to start his best life with his new family."

The department also thanked the local community for pouring in to help.
