DANBURY, CT — Whether due to crude oil reserves mismanagement stateside or shenanigans abroad, motorists are drawing upon a dwindling supply of domestic gasoline. That supply-and-demand math has pushed up national prices more than a dime, according to AAA Northeast.

On Tuesday, the average price for a gallon of regular in the U.S. hit $3.92.

You may think you have it rough at the pump in Danbury — and make no mistake, you do — but Hat City gas prices are lower than the statewide average of $3.45 on Tuesday, and considerably below the Fairfield County average of $3.53.

At $6.29, California holds the nation’s highest price for a gallon of self-serve regular. Connecticut, on the other hand, is holding steady at the 42nd spot on the list of highest gas prices in the nation. "In past years, we’ve been in or near the top 10," said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman.

In addition, higher West Coast prices are also contributing to the national average's spike. As more California refineries go back online after undergoing maintenance and the national switch to cheaper winter blends take effect, the trend may reverse, Mayko said.
