Candlewood Lake Search For 2 Missing Men No Longer Rescue Effort: DEEP

The missing men were among five people who spent the day on a boat at Candlewood Lake​ in Danbury, according to DEEP.

DANBURY, CT — The search for the two men missing in Candlewood Lake is no longer a rescue effort, an official from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said Tuesday afternoon.

The missing swimmers were described only as a 26-year-old man and a 38-year-old man who jumped from a boat into the lake Monday night and did not return. The pair were among five people who spent the day on a boat at Candlewood Lake in Danbury, according to DEEP spokesperson James Fowler.

The Danbury Fire Department was called to the scene at 10:30 p.m. Monday on a report of two men who had jumped off a boat in the area of City Island, according to Danbury police spokesperson Erin Henry.

Rescue boats utilized sonar and underwater imaging equipment and aerial drones from the Brookfield Police Department in the search, which was suspended around 2:30 a.m., Henry said.

Additional rescue boats and dive teams from Danbury Police, Brookfield, Sherman, New Fairfield, NUSAR, Region 5, Candlewood Lake Authority and Ball Pond, responded to assist with the search, which resumed Tuesday morning.

The search was once again suspended Tuesday evening, and is scheduled to resume Wednesday morning. DEEP officials are asking that the public avoid the area while the search is ongoing.
