DANBURY, CT — The New York metro area's largest health care system is growing even larger, and into Connecticut, joining forces with Danbury Hospital's parent organization.

Northwell Health, which operates 21 hospitals and employs 85,000, announced Wednesday it has entered into a strategic agreement with Nuvance Health to form "a new integrated regional health system" serving communities across both New York and Connecticut.

The move is still subject to regulatory approval.

"This agreement enables us to make significant improvements to health outcomes for community hospitals and to deliver unparalleled care and drive positive change in the healthcare landscape," said John M. Murphy, MD, president and CEO of Nuvance Health in a joint statement from both companies.

Northwell will make "significant investments" in Nuvance Health, according to the statement.

The companies believe their marriage will "increase the opportunity to attract and retain top talent," including physicians, nurses, surgical and research specialists as well as allied health and business professionals. The companies' statement also indicated their combined forces would better serve patients" and "more quickly, more efficiently and more effectively" meet their needs.

"Together we can create something truly special – an integrated health system that is even better positioned to care for the communities we serve," said Margaret Crotty, chair of the Northwell Board of Trustees.

It's not Nuvance's first rodeo. The 14,000-worker organization was born from a merger between Western Connecticut Health Network and Health Quest in 2019. That union took over a year to finalize.
