Area Residents Named Winners of Americana Furniture's "Why Apple Pie Makes Me So Happy" Essay Contest

Residents in Waterford, Pawcatuck named winners of the contest during "Americana Applefest and Veteran's Day Celebration" November 7th

During Americana Furniture’s well-attended “Americana Applefest and Veteran’s Day Celebration” on Saturday, November 7, the iconic store’s president, Jon Hendel (second from left,) announced the winner of the event’s “Why Apple Pie Makes Me So Happy” Essay Contest. The essays written by Kathleen Leivers of Pawcatuck and Barbara Lewis of Waterford garnered them both $250 gift certificates for Americana Furniture.

The “Why Apple Pie Makes Me So Happy” 300-words or less essay contest was launched in celebration of Americana Furniture’s recent opening of their Design Center which offers expert services for their customers. Assisting Mr. Hendel with the contest winner announcement inside the Design Center were (l to r) Town of Waterford First Selectman Daniel M. Steward, Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut President and CEO Thomas A. “Tony” Sheridan, and State Representative Kathleen McCarty serving Waterford and Montville. Senator Paul Formica of Niantic also enjoyed the “Celebration” activities earlier that day.

Also announced during the “Celebration”, was the winner of Americana Furniture’s Baked Apple Pie Contest, Sharon Meinz of East Lyme, and the introduction of U.S. Veteran with the Marine Corps., Mr. Michael Lally of Waterford and his children, who will receive a complementary “Room Makeover” in honor of Veteran’s Day.

The “Celebration” also featured a ribbon cutting for the new Design Center, free apple pie, apple cider, apple cider donuts, and popcorn, live music by Still Pickin’ country western and bluegrass band of Chaplin plus a strolling magician, magic shows, ‘bob for apples’ contests, face-painting, raffle prizes and more. All “Celebration” guests also received ten percent discounts on all in-store purchases.
