Obituary: Dorothy Viola Root, 100

MILFORD, CT - Dorothy Viola Root, 100, of Milford, CT passed away on April 19, 2020 at Milford Health and Rehab.

Born on February 17, 1920 in Milford, she was the daughter of Joseph M and Rose Casella Viola. She was the beloved wife of Edwin Isaac Root for 72 years.

After graduating from Milford High School, she attended Stone School of Business in New Haven, CT.

Dorothy served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1942 to 1944 where she was stationed in Milledgeville, GA and Bronx, NY. After she enlisted, she wrote and asked her fiancé, Ed, who was in the U.S. Army at the time, if he would be ok with her enlisting in the Navy, to which he wrote back, I expect you already have, and of course, she had. During leave, they got married at St Mary’s Church on February 6, 1943. She worked for her brother George as a bookkeeper at Page Motors, then for Eldorado Tool, retiring in 1985.

She is survived by her two children, her son, Robert E. Root and his wife, Joan Root of Milford, and her daughter, Susan R. Cipolla of Hillsborough NC; grandchildren, Victoria Casella and her husband, Erik Casella, Jeffrey Root of San Diego, CA, Patrick and James Root of Milford, Michael Ryan and Kristen R. Jones and her husband, Andrew of Mebane, NC; and great-grandchildren, Arianna, Avery, Anthony, Melanie, Abigail, Harper and Ella.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ed Root, and her five brothers, Carl, George, Nicholas, Johnny and Art Viola.

There will be no calling hours, a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Milford Health and Rehab 195 Platt St., Milford, CT 06460.
