Gusty winds as high as 45 mph could bring down tree branches, and hazardous driving conditions should be expected overnight Friday into Saturday.

Stamford's Office of Public Safety is urging residents to stay off the road, but if travel is necessary, to prepare for slippery roads and use extreme caution while driving.

"Light snow is now forecast to spread slowly into the state beginning late tonight, with little to no impact on this evenings rush hour commute," said Curtis, who is filling in for Mayor Caroline Simmons following the birth of her third child. "However, we are declaring a snow emergency now to give residents time to prepare and get their cars off the streets.

"Heavy snow is predicted to make overnight Friday and Saturday travel hazardous and I encourage all residents to stay home to allow road crews to clear the streets. High winds may lead to downed trees and wires and residents should be prepared, charge cellphones and make sure you have a plan if the power goes out," Curtis added.

The Stamford Government Center will be available as a warming center. Overnight shelters and other pertinent information is available on the city's website.

City garages for parking are available at:

  • Bedford Street Garage – 17 Forest St.
  • Bell Street Garage – 28 Bell St.
  • Summer Street Garage – 100 Summer St.

Garbage and Recycling

  • Please remove Garbarge and Recycling toters until the storm concludes to prevent them from blowing into the road.
  • The Katrina Mygatt Recycling Center, the Scale House and the Transfer Station will be closed on Saturday.

Alternate Parking Rules

Alternate side parking rules will automatically take effect each time there is snow accumulation greater than 2 inches. The purpose of these rules is to facilitate snow removal by providing adequate maneuvering space for snow removal equipment on narrow roadways.

When in effect, on even numbered calendar days, parking will be allowed on the even numbered side of the street and restricted on the odd numbered side of the street from 8 a.m. until 8 a.m. the following day.
