STAMFORD, CT — SoundWaters recently announced that Stamford resident Melissa Silva has been awarded the 2024 Scott Mitchell Scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving SoundWaters student who has demonstrated leadership skills and a passion for and commitment to the environment.

Silva, a recent graduate of Westhill High School, was selected because of her exceptional contributions and dedication to SoundWaters. Her involvement with the organization began in 2015 when she attended its Science Stars program over spring break that year. Silva also participated in the Young Mariner’s program and returned each summer as a camp counselor, further showing her commitment to science education.

"My time at SoundWaters has expanded my knowledge on marine life, ecosystems, pollution and food cycles. Before that, I was very weak in science, but throughout many science-based activities every summer, my education strengthened, and it helped me decide to pursue a career as a vet," Silva said in a news release.

Beyond her work with SoundWaters, Silva is an accomplished student-athlete and volunteer.

She has been a member of Westhill’s varsity soccer and track teams and is involved in several clubs including the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council (MYLC), Environmental Club and Best Buddies.

Additionally, Silva plays the piano, is a student mentor and is a member of her church’s youth group and worship team. Silva will begin her studies in animal science at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, this fall.

The Scott Mitchell Scholarship was established by SoundWaters in 2019 in honor of the longtime Board member’s exemplary leadership and his passion for SoundWaters and the environment.

Mitchell served as chair of the Board of Directors from 2013 to 2018 and his legacy continues to inspire future generations of environmental stewards.
