Prominent West Hartford Church Put On the Market

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A local church's building has been put up for sale, with no indication as to whether this impacts the future of the church or not.

According to Berkshire Hathaway Home Services New England Properties division, the Elmwood Community Church, located at 24 Newington Road, is on the market with an asking price of $1.1 million.

The property, which sits on 0.89 acres, has an assessed value of $1.47 million and the church building itself dates back to 1926, according to the listing.

Officials with the church, as well as the Southern New England Conference — United Church of Christ of which Elmwood Community is affiliated, could not be reached for comment.

West Hartford Economic Development Coordinator Kristen Gorski said Thursday that the town has yet to receive any pitches from developers regarding the site.

"The Town of West Hartford has not received any land use applications for this site. It was officially listed less than two weeks ago," she said via e-mail.

Gorski said the church is still operational right now and it is her "understanding that they will continue operations through at least June."

There is no public announcement of the church being put on the market or an indication of what the future of the church organization is.

According to the church's website, the Elmwood Community Church is "The little church with the big heart."

According to Berkshire Hathaway, the Elmwood Community Church is a "versatile property" spanning 13,000 square feet.

According to the listing, the site could be good for another church to move in, but it could also operate as a school, daycare, or "even a veterinary clinic."

Berkshire Hathaway even mentions that there is room to build a playground, if necessary.

Among the amenities mentioned for the property are offices, a kitchen, and reception space.

The real estate company selling the property said the site is located near a CVS pharmacy and Elmwood Center's dining and shopping destinations.

It also features 18 parking spaces with room for expanded parking if the zoning board approves.

A video of the site was even posted on YouTube on Feb. 6 via the Hartford County CT Properties channel.

As for the Elmwood Community Church, its history dates back to 1712, according to the church's website, and has had multiple incarnations and names since.

Work to build the current site started in 1926, with the cornerstone being laid in 1927.
