WASHINGTON, DC — The Humane Rescue Alliance is caring for six dogs that were seized from filthy conditions in a District house, the group announced Tuesday. An HRA investigation into animal cruelty in Northeast D.C. led to the rescue of the animals under a search and seizure warrant.

Upon entering the residence, HRA Humane law enforcement officers found two adult dogs and four puppies confined to crates, one of which was a shipping crate, and living in their own feces and urine, the HRA said in a statement.

"The dogs did not have access to food or water and some appeared to need medical attention," the HRA said. "The foul odor in the residence was so strong that it was discernible from outside and once inside it made rescuers’ eyes water."

“These dogs were begging for attention from our officers and have clearly lived a life of neglect for far too long,” said Chris Schindler, vice president of field services at the Humane Rescue Alliance.

The investigation began in September 2018 following an anonymous tip reporting animals being neglected at an address in the 2500 block of North Capitol Street NE.

The case remains under investigation, and HRA said the dogs are being kept at an undisclosed location, where they will be examined by veterinarians and receive medical treatment.

Anyone who suspects animal abuse or negligence is urged to call the Humane Rescue Alliance at 202-723-5730.
