What is kennel cough?

Kennel cough describes infectious cough in dogs. There are many things that could cause a dog to cough, including bacteria, like bordetella, and viruses such as distemper, canine parainfluenza, and dog flu.

Viruses and bacteria transfer from dog to dog through direct contact with respiratory secretions from an infected dog—the same way a cold or flu transfers in humans. Sometimes contaminated clothing, toys, or food and water bowls can harbor and transfer the disease. Dogs that are social and visit dog parks, kennels, groomers, or dog parties are at a higher risk of contracting kennel cough.

How serious is it?

The seriousness of the disease varies. For example, most cases of canine distemper are fatal, while bordetella infections typically resolve with supportive care. Dog flu is a disease to be very concerned with, since infected dogs can be contagious for almost a month and around 20% can show severe signs of illness, including pneumonia.

How can I protect my dog?

Prevention is always the best medicine. Fortunately, there are vaccines available to protect against most pathogens. Most boarding and day cares will require vaccinations before any visit. Check with your veterinarian and make sure your pet is protected against all types of "kennel cough."
