Deputy Hit, Killed Bicyclist In Osprey: FL Highway Patrol

OSPREY, FL — A bicyclist was killed in a crash with a marked Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office SUV Thursday night, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

The deputy, a 25-year-old North Port man, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 41 in the northbound outside lane approaching a green traffic light at the intersection of Bay Street just before midnight.

At the same time, the bicyclist, a 22-year-old Osprey woman, was traveling across the U.S. 41 northbound lanes, from east to west, at the intersection of Bay Street.

She rode in front of the deputy, who hit her, FHP said.

The woman was brought to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with critical injuries. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
