ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A St. Petersburg man was charged with first-degree murder after stabbing his girlfriend to death, according to a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Deputies responded March 9 to reports of a suicidal person at an apartment in unincorporated St. Petersburg at 2790 62nd Ave. N.

The 911 caller, later identified as Rifet Redzic, 53, said that his girlfriend, 50-year-old Nafa Secic, stabbed herself and was dead, the sheriff’s office said. When deputies got to the apartment, they found Secic dead in her bedroom with stab wounds to her chest and abdomen.

When deputies spoke to Redzic at the apartment, he told detectives he was sleeping and woke up to see Secic get a knife from the kitchen and return to their bedroom, where she stabbed herself. He told detectives he tried to stop Secic but wasn’t able to do so.

During the investigation, detectives found an additional stab wound on Secic’s back. Redzic also provided detectives with several inconsistent statements about what happened, the sheriff’s office said.

The investigation revealed that Redzic stabbed Secic multiple times, and the wounds were not self-inflicted, according to PCSO.

Redzic eventually admitted to stabbing Secic in the back, but maintained the other stab wounds were self-inflicted.

Detectives arrested Redzic Wednesday and brought him to the Pinellas County Jail.
