ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A 73-year-old St. Petersburg woman died after driving her seated electric scooter into the side of a Freightliner moving truck Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Barbara Richards was heading north on the sidewalk of 35th Street N. just before 2 p.m. when she lost control of her scooter while making a left turn onto 38th Avenue N., according to a St. Petersburg Police Department news release.

She was unable to safely navigate the turn, leaving the sidewalk and hitting the front passenger door of the truck, which was heading east in the curb lane of 38th Avenue N., police said.

The driver, who remained at the scene, is cooperating with the investigation.

Richards was brought to Bayfront Health, where she died Sunday from her injuries, police said.
