Sunday, Miami elected officials, police and clergy opened the roadway to traffic two months after its dedication following a series of construction delays, The Miami Herald reports.

“It was a little bit delayed, but, you know, they had to do things right,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Giménez said Sunday to the Herald.

Last week, the tunnel was expected to open Monday, a plan moved up just before the weekend.

The opening of the PortMiami tunnel provides direct highway access between the seaport, Miami International Airport and Interstate 95 for the first time in the port’s over 100-year history.
